A mixture of an idealist and a realist who loves a scientifically rewarding and technically challenging problem. I have been working with applied research for the past 15 years building bridges between industrial, academic, and governmental institutions. Currently, I am a Dept. Head (RAN Protocols) at Nokia Bell Labs France. Having lived and worked in several countries, including Brazil, Israel, Germany, Denmark and the US, I've accumulated significant experience leading and working as part of distributed multidisciplinary international teams. Throughout my career, I've had gratifying opportunities to imagine, plan, budget, manage, execute and deliver the results of several industrial R&D projects covering a wide range of technology maturity levels. My educational background includes:
Despite my focus on industry, I have (co-)authored several cited articles in peer-reviewed IEEE journals and conferences in the fields of ICT and unmanned mining operations. I also hold several patent applications. Current interests include, but are not limited to, industrial applications of 5G and IoT, Radio Propagation, Machine Learning, Through-the-Earth Communications as well as Safe & Secure Cyberphysical Systems.
Luis was born in Curitiba, oldest of two boys, but spent most of his childhood years in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília (Brazil). Always a curious kid, his parents parents soon realized he - wouldn't have a normal life and - was going to work in STEM fields. Because of his father's job, he had a chance to live abroad and travel the globe discovering new cultures which taught him to respect and cherish diversity at an early age. In 2000, he earned a scholarship from the Brazilian and German governments, which gave Luis his first chance to live, study and work abroad on his own. His ICT journey started in Berlin and Munich. Before returning to Brazil and discovering the mining industry, he spent amazing years in Scandinavia experiencing first-hand the benefits of a culture built on trust, honesty and open communication. After 5 years in his home country, Luis is now back in Europe where star-gazing, biking, friends, wife and his two sons keep him happy. Despite his lack of talent and operated knee (ACL), Luis enjoys playing football (the real one).
